Out and About

Abruzzo, ItalyAbruzzo is the greenest part of Europe with major national parks. You will find very few other tourists and will be welcomed warmly by local people who want their beautiful area to be known. You will be no more than 30 minutes from lovely sandy beaches, and yet in the foothills of the mountains with sweeping 360-degree views. It is the most economic part of Italy with excellent meat and vegetables at a fraction of the cost in other parts.

Nearby

The villa is situated between the two medieval villages of Serramonacesca and Manoppello. It is shown here in the foreground,  sitting on its own hilltop with stunning views of the surrounding countryside, while remaining within easy reach of all amenities which are only a few minutes drive to either of the neighboring villages.

The 9th Century abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella is a few minutes away as is Volto Santo, the famous sanctuary in Manoppello. Many medieval towns and villages are within easy reach.

Coast and Beaches

The Adriatic coastline of Pescara, Montesilvano and Francavilla al Mare are only half an hour away, with beautiful clean beaches to be enjoyed.

Skiing

The nearest ski resort is only 30 mins by car and is a small friendly resort with all the facilities you would need. Skiing here is generally gentle through beech woods. Around an hour’s drive away are numerous larger resorts including Roccaraso. The highest point is 2,141 metres above sea level (7024 feet, or 1.3 miles high – higher than “mile high” Denver, USA and only a little less than the famous ski resort of Vail, Colorado, but not high enough to suffer from any serious altitude problems) with 156km of pistes of varying difficulty.

The region as a whole has 21 ski areas located in the highest region of the Apennines and they often have more snow than the Alps. Abruzzo also is popular for cross country skiing, especially on the high plain of Campo Imperatore in the Gran Sasso. Prices are cheaper than in the Alps.

Local activities and events

The area is of outstanding beauty set in the foothills of the mountains on the edge of the Majella National Park which is home to all sorts of wild animals (including wolves and bears!) Walks can be organised for mushroom or truffle gathering, picking wild asparagus, or just for sightseeing. Both local villages have banking facilities, shops, restaurants and cafes. One is sleepy and tranquil, one more lively. In the summer all the villages organise local festivals and there are medieval processions and exhibitions. Our local village organises a mountain walk. There are many untouched villages around with not a tourist in sight. This is hidden Italy.
